Braces (Orthodontics)

Dental Braces Orthodontics

In dentistry, all of the treatments for the correction of oral and facial anomalies are called orthodontics. Braces treatment is one of the applications made in this field. Braces treatment aims to harmonize the jaw structure with the teeth. Braces treatment is also called orthodontic treatment. With this treatment method, beautiful smiles and a better quality of life can be achieved.

How Is Orthodontic Treatment Done?

  • The principle work of braces is continuous force application. Continuous force is applied to the desired direction for a certain time interval. The tooth and the tissue around the tooth may be damaged if the applied force is too much.

  • In order to take the desired position for tooth, it must be constantly tightened with constant and light pressure. Some apparatuses adhere to teeth and through which braces threads pass. These apparatuses are called brackets. Brackets contribute to the treatment as they are attached to teeth. Brackets are handles that point teeth in the right direction. They apply force to teeth through wires. By this way, teeth reach the desired position over time.

  • Orthodontic treatment aims to move the teeth within the bone. In a few days, the movement to take place is not possible.

  • In modern treatment methods, the desired result can be achieved with short and infrequent appointments. Patients may be offered treatment options such as metal, glass or ceramic brackets.

When Should Orthodontic Treatment Be Done?

According to the statement made by the International Orthodontic Union, children in the age group 7 should undergo orthodontic treatment. In this way, developmental problems in children’s teeth can be diagnosed at an early age.

Treatment can be started early if the problems are detected early. In general, this treatment should not be started before the age of 10-12 years. Even if nothing is done physically during the controls, the jaw structure and the development of the teeth are determined.

In adults, this treatment is suitable for all age groups. It’s never too late to get a beautiful smile. There may be some displacements in the dental structures of adults due to tooth extraction. This will cause irregularities in the mouth structure. With orthodontic treatment methods, these irregularities can be corrected.

Technology has developed rapidly in recent years and people have become conscious. As a result of this, use of braces has also increased significantly.

Things to Consider in Braces Treatment

Braces treatment is a long process and it requires patience. The dentist should explain the process to the patient in detail at the beginning of the treatment and the patient should apply all the doctor’s recommendations with precision. Otherwise, the desired result cannot be achieved from the treatment. After the braces are attached to the teeth, pain may be felt for a certain period of time. You should see your doctor if the pain persists for a long time.

Some foods and beverages should be avoided during the treatment period. These include hard foods such as apples. In addition to this, foods such as Turkish delight and chewing gum is not recommended to consume as they have the property of sticking to teeth. Your food preferences should include juicy, soft and easily digestible foods.

People with braces should protect the mouth area against external impacts. Any external influence can cause the braces to break. Especially those who do active sports should either take a break from active sports or show sensitivity during the treatment process.

You should be careful not to brush your teeth harshly while wearing braces. Teeth should be brushed with a soft brush without pressing. Also, interdental brushes can be preferred for cleaning between the brackets in the mouth after orthodontics.
